  Prologue

Her eyes darted from side to side as she walked into the room. She did not know where he was hiding, but she felt he was nearby.

He had told her earlier in the day to be on guard when she got home, he had a surprise for her.

  "I know you are here."

Diane whispered, hoping he would hear. The darkened house was familiar, but strange to her now. She knew where everything was. The chair in the living room, the ugly lamp on the large stone table, the soft carpet beneath her feet, it was all familiar, but did not matter now. It was hard to see in the muted light, and the unknown was what she felt the strongest now. Her breath was ragged; she felt the dampness of perspiration on her upper lip from the tension. Where is he and what is he up to? Her steps were tentative, and gentle. She felt if she made too much noise she might startle herself, and bring forth something unknown. This is silly Diane giggled to herself. She was getting giddy from the nervousness, and it was expressing itself beyond her control. She wondered if she was going to break out into laughter, but knew she shouldn't.

  "It would give me away."

Sounds that in the past were common, now rang in her hears. Creaking floors, the fridge humming in the distance, the outdoor sounds of the wood filtered through closed windows seemed as foreign and frightening as the roar of a lion in this dim mystery she found herself exploring. As she rounded the corner she saw a single lit candle flickering in the darkness of the dining room. Beneath it, covered in drops of dark red wax was a simple note.

"My dearest, this is the evening, tonight is the time, remember last night and the conversation we had, and this morning, the last words I said before I left for work. Follow the clues for the night of your life. Go to the garage. Love, Mark"

  Chapter I

"How do you want your eggs?"

Diane shouted upstairs to Mark. There was no response.

Probably still in the shower she thought.

  "Scrambled it is then"

Diane spoke into the room as she broke the eggs, and watched them plop into the hot pan. While she stirred them into morning froth, she mused about last night. She never expected him to just come out and ask. After nine years of marriage, she thought they had a fairly normal sex life, but she did fantasize, and she knew he did too. He just came out and asked, and threw her for a loop.

"What's your number one fantasy? I mean the big one, deep down inside, the things you think about that you have never told me."

Mark asked while scrubbing his hair dry. It was so nonchalant' Diane almost did not think he had said it. Maybe I just think that's what he said she thought, but he repeated it as he walked into the bedroom to get dressed for the party. She wondered if she should answer him truthfully, or give one of the standard answers she had always said, which were basically things he wanted to hear, and he wanted to do.

  "You are my fantasy sweetheart!"

  Diane offered breathlessly, almost comically.

"I know better. Fine, if you don't want to tell me, I will find out some other way"

Mark tossed off, almost in a passing fashion. Diane really wondered what brought it up, but wasn't about to ask.

Diane had been a housewife for the last few years. She had been working as the administrator and office manager for a local Doctor's group, but when Mark was promoted to full partner in the law firm, she left the stress and hassle behind. Diane loved their life. For the first time since college they didn't have to worry about money. Diane kept the house immaculate. She volunteered a little. They had even built a small three room guest house at the back of the yard as a place for her parents to stay when they visited, because Mark and her Dad didn't see eye to eye on much. Mark had finally reached a position where he could pick and choose the cases he worked on and as Diane expected, he tended to choose the most challenging ones. Every aspect of their lives seemed to fall into place. There were times Diane longed for a little more excitement in their lives. She would try and spice things up with an unexpected vacation to the shore, or by buying Mark some present but she really wanted some real excitement.

Bill and Ashley threw a great party. There was everything you would expect from a great party. Lots of great food and drink, there was a three piece combo playing on a stage in the back yard and tons of people. After a couple of hours of doing the couple thing Mark was standing near the pool talking football with a group of guys and Diane found herself, as she usually does, sitting with her best friend Lia talking quietly about the other people at the party, and laughing about the gossip of who is sleeping with whom, and griping about their husbands.

"He just came out and asked?"

Lia spoke a little too loud.

"Lower your voice! Yes, he just asked, and acted as if I was just going to answer."

  "Well, did you?"

  Diane paused a long moment.

  "Almost"

Lia took a deep drink from the Manhattan she had been nursing.

  "Why didn't you?"

Diane as she looked towards the open patio doors.

"I don't know, maybe I don't want him to think he isn't making me happy"

  "Is he? Making you happy"

"Of course! He is great to me."

"That's not what I meant Di and you know it!"

Diane flushed a little, knowing what she meant. It wasn't as if they hadn't talked about each other's sex lives before, but Diane felt as if she was going somewhere she hadn't before with her friend.

"Things are great in the bedroom, if that's what you mean."

Diane's voice was a whisper. Lia wasn't stopping there.

"You told me once you wanted things to spice up a little did not you? And you had bought some new outfits you might try out on him sometime. Have you yet?"

  "Not yet."
/>
Diane's eyes fell to her lap and she fidgeted a little.

"You looked great in them! Why haven't you?"

Lia was a little frustrated with her friend.

  "Mark is so….so…"

  "So what?"

"So normal. I don't want him to think I wasn't the person he married."

"Do you think he is the same person you married? Hell Di, people change. There's nothing wrong with that. If you want to try something different, let him know, Mark loves you and I bet he would like it too."

Lia assured her for the next few minutes that she wasn't weird, that Mark was open minded, that the outfits she bought weren't freaky, and she looked great in them, and she should at least tell him. Diane wasn't so sure.

As they talked, and continued to drink, Lia began pressing for more information. Diane was reluctant at first, but after a while began telling her friend some of the more lurid details she had fantasized.

"Leather and men, not man, but men, and more"

Diane blushed at first, but Lia was a friend for many years, and the embarrassment wore off after hearing her say they shared many of the same thoughts and that Lia had actually tried some of the things she had been thinking.

  "Really??"

  Diane's eyes flared wide.

  "Yes"

  Lia stated matter-of-factly.

"It was great! Not something for everyday, but once in a while I loved it!"

"Two guys. Wow! What did Charles think?"

  Diane was now the interrogator.

"He seemed to really enjoy it. I did have to give him a special night later. Well, I did not have to, but I wanted to, and I think that made it all right. All right enough that we did it again a few months later."

Lia was the one blushing now.

"I don't want it to happen in a planned way though"

Diane's speech was slurred a little.

"I want it to be a surprise. I want . . . Oh Hi Honey!"

Diane blurted out as Mark walked up.

"Come on Di, we need to get home."

Mark bent and took her by the arm, gently helping her to her feet. Mark spoke to Lia, and gave her a tiny cheek kiss good night and the two eased towards the door. Once in the car, Diane felt rather sleepy. Leaning on the headrest, Mark told her he would be right back. Mark said he had forgotten something, and would be right back. Diane did not remember the ride home, she felt him undressing her in their bedroom, and placing her on the sheets and pulling the blanket over her. Morning came shining rudely through their window, and Diane could hear Mark in the shower. She got up, and peeked in the bathroom and spied his cute little butt through the glass stall doors and smiled as she headed into the other bathroom.

The sizzle and pop of the eggs snapped Diane back to the kitchen. Mark came in, took a seat, opened the paper and sipped his coffee. Diane made their plates and took a seat across from him and they ate. They talked about the night before, and how Diane did not really remember much about the latter part of the night. She remembered talking to Lia, but wouldn't say what they had been talking about for the three hours or so they sat together.

  "Three hours!?"

Diane couldn't believe what Mark had said.

"Yes dear, you two sat there jabbering and giggling for three hours."

Mark insisted that he had watched them and let them talk saying "it looked like you needed to talk". As Mark finished off his coffee, he stood walked around the table, grabbed his briefcase, kissed Diane on the cheek and told her he would be late due to a meeting of the partners.

"I made reservations for you at Donatello's for 8pm. I will try to be there, but if I don't make it, I will meet you here no later than 10. I have to stop here before my meeting, if I don't make it to dinner, I will try to leave a note on the door with instructions."

Mark closed the door with a quick "I love you". Diane did not have a chance to ask about the "instructions" It was an odd choice of words Diane thought. She dismissed it and cleaned up the kitchen. The day followed its predictable pattern. Diane straightened up the house and late in the afternoon she dressed for dinner. Diane was practiced at heading out to dinner alone. Mark tried his best to make his dinners but often failed. Grabbing a cab Diane headed to the restaurant. Diane sat in the bar and had a few drinks. After fending off a few heavy handed advances Diane took a table and ate a salad. It was nearing ten thirty when Diane paid the bill and climbed into a cab for the lonely trip back to the house. Walking up the cobblestone path to the front door Diane could see a piece of paper taped to the small window at the top. Diane retrieved the note and tucked it into her pocket and turned the handle. There were no lights on in the house, only a single candle burned on the dining room table.

The light from the candle made eerie shadows on the pastel walls of the dining room. She reached into the pocket of her jeans and retrieved the note from the front door.

"Diane, do not turn on any lights, follow the candles for the clues to this mystery. Do as each note commands and you will remember this night forever. If at anytime, you break the rules then the mystery is shattered, and you will find me asleep in our room. Go to the dining room for your first clue. M."

Diane walked hurriedly to the dining room table. A note was stuck to a candle with a straight pin.

"You have taken the first step. If you want to know more, go to the garage."

She drew a deep breath and began easing towards her next destination, the garage. Though the kitchen and linen room, Diane tiptoed like a cat burglar. She was sure he was going to spring from a dark corner and scare the bejesus out of her. Diane was on pins and needles. The door to the garage opened with a long horror movie squeak. She never remembered the door making that sound before, but then again she thought, "I have never opened this door so slowly before."

The garage was, well, a garage. It had never been used for anything more than storage space and play room.

"The cars longed for chance to sit in its enclosed space on a rainy day,"

Diane told Mark once, hoping he would clean it up enough for parking. She noticed immediately, it was straightened up. It looked positively empty except for a table in the center of the room with a flickering candle in the middle. Diane took more full strides towards the table and was startled by the loud echoing click her heels made on the concrete. The candle, a note, that's all.

"If you are here you are following the rules and are in the game all the way now. This is your last chance to turn back. Leave this room and turn on the kitchen light if you don't want to go any further. "

  "Fat chance"

Diane whispered in the near darkness and read on.

"Light the other candles and see the choices you have before you"

  "What candles?"

Diane spoke aloud before noticing at the edge of the table there were in fact three other candles. She took the one and lit the three. As each wax obelisk came to life the room brightened. Diane was startled to see draped on hangers on the wall, four outfits. She hadn't seen any of them before, but was surprised to see they were very similar to ones she already owned or wanted to own. The first was a white lacy thing; a teddy with spaghetti straps, not too sheer, almost wedding night virginal in its style. The second was naughtier. It was almost completely see through, black fishnet material. The third left little to the imagination. Black with red trim, it was cup less with thong back and transparent, and the fourth was, well, the one she chose. Its faux leather gripped her body tightly. The cups held her breasts high and the slits in them allowed her nipples to peak through if she turned the right way. It wasn't the easiest thing to get on, and the snaps at the crotch made it a contortionist dream. Once in it, she felt incredible and incredibly sexy. Diane couldn't help but notice it was more not there, than there. Open sides and midriff, with small straps connecting the top to the bottom. Diane slipped her heels back on and plucked a note that had been on the hanger. She turned it over.

"Now you have chosen. Your choice determines the rest
of the evening. This is my favorite. It tells me a lot about you and what you want. Go up to the study for your next clue. No lights."

Diane walked out of the garage into the kitchen and on to the dining room. She was taken aback a little when she saw the candle and previous note were gone and in their place was a single piece of black cloth, about two feet long and three inches wide. It was a heavy, yet soft cloth; Diane picked it up and slipped it behind one of the connecting straps of her outfit for some reason. It just seemed like the thing to do.

Walking quietly through the house to the stairs Diane was again acutely aware of her surroundings. She caught whiffs of unfamiliar scents, and heard odd sounds. Her heart raced. Diane took each step ever so slowly, climbing to an uncertain fate. As Diane rounded the landing a slight rush of cool air met her bare legs, she could see into the study at the end of the hall, and its curtains rustling in front of the open window. Diane moved without a sound into the room. Peeking behind the door, almost expecting Mark to be sitting there with a goofy grin on his face, she giggled a little when she scanned the room and found it empty, except for a lone candle and a note. Diane trembled and lifted the note. Straining to read in the dim light, she turned a little to the candles glare.

"Good Girl, this is the point of no return. Turn on the light and we will take an evening to sleep and then greet another day. If the mystery is what you still seek, then remain in the dark, and read on."

Diane paused, wondering if she was up for whatever he had planned. She was nervous, scared a little, but more excited and yes, more turned on than she had ever been in her life. Diane trusted Mark, and knew she couldn't turn back now. She turned the note.

"Leave this room and go to the guest house, once inside have a seat, relax, place the cloth you picked up on the table inside. Do not move anything, and go no further than the living room."

"How did he know I would pick the cloth up?"

Diane walked over and pushed aside the curtains and looked down at the guesthouse at the back of the yard. Nothing looked out of the ordinary. She eased back downstairs and paused at the open back door. Diane hesitated before stepping out into the yard. Her modesty flared up, but she realized it was One in the morning, and the seven foot high fence kept people from seeing her when she sunbathed in the nude, so why was her near nudity an issue now?
